5 Weaning Foods to Keep In Stock

I became a mum almost 18 months ago, and feeding a baby/toddler is no joke. I found weaning both exciting and terrifying, with a bit of frustration thrown in when a dish I’ve lovingly prepared hits the deck. Classic.

Now, don’t worry, I’m not going to get all preachy and tell you what you should or shouldn’t feed your child. You do you. I’m just sharing a few things that have worked for me and are always good to have on hand for those “Oh God, what am I going to feed you today?!” moments.

Frozen veg

Little ones' appetites can vary from day to day, and at first, I struggled to get through things before they went off. Enter frozen vegetables. Just as nutritious, and you can boil or roast exactly what you need, avoiding waste. Not only that, but I find it so handy being able to chuck the veg in with pasta or rice, keeping the washing up to a minimum. Broccoli, cauliflower, and peas have been big hitters in this house, as well as sliced peppers that can be thrown straight into a pan from frozen. Genius.

Frozen salmon

This one really is a fail-safe for those times you open the fridge and go, “Ah, shit”. These guys can go straight in the oven from frozen. You can get fillets that are individually wrapped, again helping to manage waste. I usually flake it up with some broccoli (see above 😏), a bit of cream cheese, and either some potatoes or pasta.

Pasta in baby-friendly shapes

Like mother, like daughter—my girl is a pasta-eating machine. Since the early weaning days, she has loved everyone’s favourite carb. I found that fusilli and rigatoni work really well for little hands and mouths. Also, orzo every day.

Weetabix

Look, I personally don’t get it. It tastes like a bowl of straw to me, but it’s the baby breakfast of champions. We’ve had to make sure she gets enough fibre, and her morning bowl of cosy Weetabix is now firmly part of our routine. Happy tummy, happy baby!

Petit Filous are life*

I don’t think I’d seen these guys for almost 30 years, but they’re back with a vengeance. Perfectly portioned for dessert or a post-nap snack, Edith is absolutely yoghurt-daft. I really like the squeezy pouches as she’s now able to have these herself, giving me a minute to get the kitchen back in order before she’s unleashed from her high chair.

*Other yoghurts are available.

Are there any other cupboard staples you’d recommend? Let me know!
